Very Good Things
...a plea for suggestions
We finally moved back into our kitchen. I ran the dishwasher for the first time last night and am now relishing the headiness of picking up a fork and not having to inspect it for grossness before I use it. Heaven.
I just read that back. I definitely need to get out more, probably read a book etc…
So in the spirit of prising myself out of a rut, I’d love to know your suggestions for things - books, exhibitions, recipes, podcasts, plants, that have made you sit up and think, or stare in wonder, or just laugh recently?
Here are a few things I’m enjoying currently:
A book: New York by Edward Rutherford. He’s turned his historical fascination into a story and I’m loving it. Extra bonus is that all the questions you wondered about but never asked (why is it called ‘Wall Street’?) are answered. Absorbing, easy, informative, fun.
A very good purchase: My absolutely beautiful new chairs.
An exhibition: Zurbaran at the National Gallery. I can’t quite put my finger on why I loved this so much. I suspect it’s because God was very much guiding the paintbrush, but I am going back again on Friday for another look.
A Podcast: This episode of Alas, Vine and Hitchens, in which Peter Hitchens gets very cross about centigrade temperatures.
A Truth: Self-discipline is bad for the economy.
Best thing on the internet: Sirga the Lioness If you need me I’ll be in bed watching Sirga greeting her human friend.
A clever thing: This Sudoku packing method, which gives you 27 different outfits with zero thinking involved (obvs add shoes!)
Now do share yours - any and all suggestions welcome!

Do try 'The Things We Never Say' by the wonderful Elizabeth Strout. Best known for her character Olive Kitteridge, this is very different and moving story set in a small town in Massachusetts.
Ann Patchett’s new novel Whistler is wonderful!
