Happy Easter! Alleluia!
I’m away, and thought I would send this a day early, to celebrate the joy of Easter by showing you the apotheosis of my table of tiny bulbs, which were extra special this year, mostly because I had a surface large enough to make a splash with them.
The iris reticulata were first of course, (you can see them here) and there was a bit of a ‘hungry gap’ before the muscari got their act together. Next year I will make sure to have iris reticulata in different colours (not just dark purple…what was I thinking?) and a lot more tiny tulips which were far and away my favourite part of this whole thing. They look exactly like the motifs on old tiles and I’m very much here for more of that. Annoyingly I cannot tell you what these little tulips are, because of course they were panic-bought, last-minute at my local garden centre and I haven’t kept receipts or packets, but species tulips are basically what you are after here, if you want to try them.
I’ll also plant a lot more snakeshead fritillaries as they are never not fabulous. I’m also going to note that the paperwhite narcissi you can see here, together with the very early bulbicodium narcissi served a very important function of starting off the daff season on this bulb table super-early.
They were supposed to come inside the house, but I never actually did that because they looked so perfect here.
The tiny narcissi are essential I think and their scent was transporting, but the star was T. acuminata, which I will be planting a lot more of next year.
There are some bulbs which, of course, haven’t turned up at all (you can see them in the small square pots above, but I cannot for the life of me remember what they are, so I don’t particularly care.
I did a small amount of pot tetris here, removing the irises when they went over, and putting the best stuff at the front etc, but I haven’t even thought of using any ‘fillers’ (polyanthus etc which Monty used on his beautiful table) because 1. this isn’t telly, and 2. the whole thing was joyful enough.
I usually compost these type of things but this year I’m slowly planting them out in parts of my gravelly terrace, hoping that perhaps some of them will pop back up. Some of these areas have irrigation, so it may end up too damp for anything but fritillaries, but we’ll see.
That’s it! I hope you all have a wonderful Easter, however you are celebrating it. Blessings to everyone and THANK you as always for being here.
x Laetitia
Happy Easter dear Laetitia, I very much hope you are having a relaxing time. Your spring display has been delightful and I am still on the lookout for a table the right size so I can do this myself next year!
Joyeuses Pâques chère Laetitia !
